Your child(ren) have been assigned a whanau teacher. What is the role of the Whanau Teacher?

Building Strong Relationships

The key to effective learning is getting into a learner’s quality world and making connections. Relationships are key for success, developing a sense of belonging and wellbeing at school, engagement in learning, learning dispositions and identity as a learner. The Whanau Teacher is the key teacher responsible for developing and building a relationship with your child. They are the person who your child will meet with daily.

Communication

Whanau Teachers are the direct point of contact for parents/caregivers in regards to their child. Getting to know parents/caregivers helps teachers understand the environment and influences that shape students' points of view and behaviour. This leads to improved communication between students and teachers, enhancing trust, mutual respect and the education process.

Tracking and Monitoring 

All teachers will be responsible for the teaching and learning of your child. It is the Whanau Teachers responsibility to Track and Monitor the progress of your child. This will also include formal reporting and Learning conferences.

Pathways

The learning process involves identifying what a learner knows, what they want to know and creating a pathway to fill the gap. The Whanau Teacher will reflect with your child on what learning they have achieved and what their next step is. They will be responsible for ensuring & guiding your child towards the right learning groups to continue making progress.
