Te Waka Unua School Values

Te Waka Unua School - February 19, 2022

Respect, Excellence, Integrity. Following consultation when Woolston and Phillipstown Schools merged, the following values were chosen to underpin day-to-day curriculum implementation in Te Waka Unua School. It was decided that focusing on these three core values incorporated a range of other values that were identified as being important by our school community.

Students will be encouraged to value:

Excellence: Always do your best * Be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing * have a 'ready to learn' attitude * work towards your learning goals.

Show excellence by aiming high and by persevering in the face of difficulties — for example, achievement; excellence; doing your personal best; perseverance; resilience; striving; competition.

Integrity: Be honest and kind * Always try your best * Own your mistakes and work to make them right * Stand up for your beliefs appropriately * Follow through with responsibilities * Care for equipment, belongings and the environment.

Integrity involves being honest, responsible, and accountable and acting ethically — for example, responsibility; accountability; reliability; commitment; honesty; truthfulness; trustworthiness; being ethical; doing right; moral courage.

Respect: Be inclusive and understanding of others * Use positive, polite and kind words * Treat our environment, equipment, property and people with care.

Respect themselves, others, and human rights - for example, human dignity; personhood; individual rights; freedom; personal autonomy; human rights; compassion; aroha; consideration; concern; empathy; self-esteem; self-respect; self-belief, self-discipline; respect for property; mana; safety; physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being; hauora.

These values should be expressed in everyday actions and interactions within the school.
