Planting Kahikatea at Te Oranga Waikura

James Souter —

In term 3 students from Piwakawaka Te Kei had the opportunity to take part in tree-planting across the road at Te Oranga Waikura. Georgina from the Christchurch City Council guided the process helping us to understand the importance of protecting our environment.

Students learned how to dig a proper hole for a tree, gently remove the sapling from its pot, and place it into the ground. After positioning the tree, they compacted the soil by stepping on it and added a blanket around the root area to keep it protected. To ensure the sapling stayed safe from pests, they used cardboard and bamboo as a protective barrier.

Working in teams, students paired up with buddies and senior students from Toroa Te Tauihu to complete the planting process. It was a great example of teamwork and collaboration, and everyone was excited to contribute to making our community greener and more sustainable.

A big thank you to Georgina and the Christchurch City Council for providing this valuable learning experience and helping us make a positive impact on the environment!
