Toroa Te Kei visited Sumner Beach this week to learn about the importance of sand dunes and how to protect them
Our day began with a lesson about sand dunes with two Christchurch City Council Educators, Tracey and Chris.
We learnt about how crucial sand dunes are for coastal communities. We discovered how these natural formations protect the shoreline, provide habitats for various wildlife, and help prevent erosion. We made our own sand dunes and added sand fences and safety pathways to protect the dunes and the animals, insects and plants that live in them. We were happy we didn't see any katipō spiders, who live in the sand dunes.
After our session, we set out to explore Cave Rock and because it was low tide we could explore the rock pools. It was great to see the tamariki exploring the rock pools, searching for marine life.
Our trip was also a fantastic way to connect with nature and each other. We returned home inspired and more aware of the importance of being kaitiaki of our beautiful coastal environments.
