Year 13 Camp - Waihi Beach

Neil Harray —

A great group of students, lots of new experiences and learning.

This was an important camp for our current Year 13 students. Our Year 13 students play such an important role in setting the tone for the school and influencing other students. We had some pretty clear objectives for this camp.

  • To create a sense of unity and cohesion amongst the Year 13 students

  • Provide leadership opportunities for student leaders

  • Develop a shared understanding of expectations, aspirations and school, year level and personal goals

  • Have some fun, explore new places and new experiences

We also wanted to create a camp that was inspirational for other students and something to aspire towards. Our current Year 13 cohort are a very good reflection of our community.

The structure of the camp was to have a balance between structured, prepared activities and the ability for students to direct and choose some activities. Students were also allowed some free time to relax, walk on the beach and relax - to have some thinking time.

This was the first camp where we have partnered with the Perry Outdoor Education Trust (POET). They provide fantastic guidance and support in preparing outdoor education camps as well as securing funding to ensure that locally based outdoor experiences for our students can be as affordable as possible.

We look forward to working with POET in the future and expanding our outdoor education opportunities at Te Aroha College.
