A continued focus on learning to learn in 2023 - Assessment for Learning

In 2023, our kura continues to work hard on the positive impact we have on our learners in class and to support them to learn how to learn.

Alongside their building of knowledge in subject areas, we know that equipping all learners to be actively engaged in learning is vital. Renowned educational leader Guy Claxton shares with us the importance of being a learner when he states, “In a complicated, fast-changing world, the intelligent path is to let go of being a knower and embrace being a learner.”

We aim for all our learners to own their learning and understand how they can improve their learning daily.

Assessment for learning:

Our approach to learning is called ‘Assessment for Learning’. In a nutshell, Assessment for Learning is a way to ensure that learning is individualised and inclusive and promotes active and self-regulated learners.

This approach has us focusing on high-expectations teaching, building learning-focused relationships, the process rather than the product of learning, learners leading their own learning; “where I’m at”, “where I’m going” and “how I’m going to get there” and clarity in the classroom; “what am I learning”, “why and I am learning it” and “what does great learning look like”.

How students can support their learning:

  • Be prepared for each lesson

  • Bring your Chromebook to kura every day, charged and ready for use

  • Cellphones are switched off and in your bag or the teacher’s drop box

  • Be on time for learning

  • Be focused on the learning korero

  • Use break times to access the wharepaku

How whānau can support their young person’s learning:

  • Have conversations about learning at home with your young person. Asking questions about some of the topics above could be great starting points for you.

  • Whenever possible, minimise scheduling appointments inside of learning time.

  • Assist them in getting to school on time.

How the community is supporting learning at Tauranga Girls’ College:

  • New World Gate Pa is supporting the kura’s focus on learning and high expectations of our learners by requesting that students in Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 do not enter the premises during learning time unless accompanied by an adult.
