Red Leap Theatre Devising Workshop
In the Performing Arts Department, we get some amazing learning opportunities such as working ‘hands-on’ with industry experts.
In Term 3 Week 1, Red Leap Theatre Company traveled from Auckland to facilitate a practical devising workshop with our Year 11 students and guests. Some great learning took place and some beautiful moments of theatre were created.
‘They help me understand and demonstrate the tools/actions that we used such as miniatures, using torches to help make shadows, and how we could use chairs as sets. ‘ Kate Pentecost
‘Today we depicted a refugee(s) running away from persecution. One challenge was to simply use chairs as our set. We used these to represent a window and slowly opened the top chair up to create a “crawling through tunnel” effect… [We also used ] chairs as a way to incorporate height into the piece, we held the chair to create steps whilst a member of the group climbed up the chairs and had a slow motion fall when becoming unbalanced.‘ Zoey Fryer
‘I learned that actions speak louder than words, words don’t always need to express how a person feels. If a person looks out in the distance that can mean something in their world must be happening. I’ve also learned that lighting can be used to make a scene more tense or exciting, and puppetry can be used as small figurines, so long it’s understandable, it’s all from the imagination of the people you communicate with everyone’s ideas coming into one glorious piece of art.’ Katelyn Sheepers
