Year 9 Computer Science
This term Year 9 Computer Science has been learning to build and program robots using our class set of EV3 Lego Mindstorms.
Students work in pairs to build the driving base and then through a series of activities focused on developing their programming skills. So far they have learnt to program the robot to carry out different maneuvers, detect an object and pick it up using an ultrasonic sensor, follow a line along a path and change direction at specific angles.
Currently students are using this new knowledge to create a factory robot, not unlike the Amazon distribution robots or an autonomous forklift, where the robot is programmed to pick up a package, deliver it to the drop zone and follow a line to a charging station. Everyone seems very determined to meet this challenge, and there is a lot of trial and error to get the program just right. Watch this space for our future robotics engineers!
