National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival

Performing Arts —

Over Queen’s Birthday weekend three budding thespians: Inaya Sinclair, Alymayu Ramirez Lema and Talia MacKinnon, along with Drama teacher Ms Cassells, drove to Wellington for the National Shakespeare Festival.

After winning the Student Directed section of the regional competition, the girls were buzzing and more than ready to perform their piece on the big stage... the Michael Fowler Centre to be precise!

The weekend included inspirational speakers, exciting workshops and plenty of Shakespeare. The girls were impressed with the range of talented young actors on show and their enthusiasm for the bard and everything theatre, grew as the weekend progressed. The TGC performance, a physical theatre piece exploring the downfall of Ophelia from Hamlet, was outstanding. Their commitment to create innovative, exciting theatre was a real credit to them. Although the national event is very much a festival, not a competition, prizes are given out at the end of the festival to celebrate stand out performances. The Tauranga Girl's College performance was awarded “Best use of the Stage Space” an amazing achievement. Well done girls!
