Hillary Pursuits Scholarship

TGC —

On December 3 2021 Year 12 students were awarded a scholarship from Decision Reach Out Toromai Trust to attend a Leadership camp in Tongariro from 19-24 December.

Katie Hills, Jayzel Borlaza, Abigail Foreman and Marysa Pope were joined by a number of Tauranga Boys' College students as well as other students from schools in the Waikato region.   This leadership experience made the girls not only grow their own confidence and leadership skills but also made them learn to trust, listen and work with others.  Here are some of their words on their experience.

"I want to thank everyone involved in helping to make the week possible including Maichu our guide, Errol and the Decision Reach Out Toromai Trust and for Clark and Tomasi for giving up their time to talk to us on the night of the prizegiving. It made me question my outlook on my life and how I need to make sure I have an optimistic attitude. Throughout this experience I gained more confidence in myself as I know I can do anything I set my mind to and the only thing that is holding me back is myself. I feel motivated from this experience to take part in more exciting adventures in the future and to give more things a go. I am looking forward to making lots of positive changes to my life in 2022. Again I am so grateful I was selected for this scholarship as it has helped me to realise who I am and who I want to become."

"This camp has taught me so much. Not only did I learn communication and listening skills that are crucial for working well as a team, but I learnt more about myself. I learned that I quite enjoy rock climbing and that I am not as afraid of height as I thought I was. But I am very grateful I got to experience this camp with the people that came alongside me."

"My favorite part of the whole trip was drinking the fresh water straight out of the rivers on the hike, and the caving. I feel as though caving was the most adventurous thing I have done, and something I would have never done if it wasn’t for this scholarship. I am excited to use the skills I learned including, trusting myself in the choices I make, and trusting others in the choices they make to form a group decision. Also making sure that everyone is comfortable in what is happening."
Marysa Pope SNHA

"This experience taught me how to manage, support others, having fun and the most important thing is to trust your teammates because they were always there to support whenever I needed help or support. Once again thank you so much to Division Reach Out Toromai Trust."
