Attendance Matters: Ensuring Success for Our Ākonga

TGC —

Regular attendance is crucial for your daughter/young person's success.

Every day at school provides valuable learning opportunities that build a strong foundation for your daughter/young person's future. Our goal is for all our ākonga (students) to attend at least 90% of the time.

To ensure accurate attendance records and student safety, it's essential to inform the school office whenever your daughter/young person will be absent. You can easily report absences through one of the following methods:

  • Phone: Call the school office directly.

  • School App: Utilize the designated absence reporting feature within our school app (please refer to app instructions for details).

  • Email: Send an email to absences@tgc.school.nz.

Your prompt notification helps us maintain accurate records and ensure your daughter/young person's well-being.

Understanding Absences:

The Ministry of Education provides clear guidelines on what constitutes a justified absence. These include:

  • Medical reasons: When your child is unwell and requires medical attention.

  • Bereavement: In times of family loss.

  • Local and national representation: When your child is representing the school or country.

It's important to note that all absences must be coded with a reason.

Unjustified Absences:

Please be aware that the following are considered unjustified absences by the Ministry of Education:

  • Family holidays, whether within New Zealand or overseas.

  • Celebrating birthdays or special shopping trips, etc

  • Older siblings babysitting younger siblings, which removes them from their learning.

Attendance Thresholds and Communication:

When your daughter/young person's absence reaches five days within a term, you will be notified. This indicates that their attendance has fallen below the 90% threshold. This notification includes all unjustified absences accumulated throughout the term, not just consecutive days.

Illness During the School Day:

  • If your daughter/young person becomes unwell or is injured at school, they will be attended to in the Health Centre.

  • A signed slip from their teacher is required to visit the Health Centre during class time.

  • If your daughter/young person is too unwell to return to class, you will be contacted to arrange collection.

  • Students must go through the health centre and the school will contact home, they may not contact whānau directly.

  • Please keep your contact details up to date.

Utilizing the Parent Portal:

The parent portal is an excellent tool for monitoring your daughter/young person's attendance. We encourage you to use it regularly. If you need assistance accessing the portal, please contact your daughter/young person's whānau teacher or the school office.

Why Attendance Matters:

Consistent attendance directly impacts your daughter / young person's learning and future opportunities. The more time they spend in the classroom, the more knowledge they gain, and the greater their choices will be upon leaving school.

We appreciate your support in ensuring your daughter/young person attends school regularly and arrives on time, ready to learn.
