Level 3 History - Bay of Islands and Waitangi Trip
Our Level 3 History students had a fantastic experience travelling to the beautiful Bay of Islands. The trip cemented three years of learning based on the history of Aotearoa. They visited historic sites of national significance, including the Treaty Grounds in Waitangi, Pompailler House, the Kerikeri Stone Store, Te Waimate Mission & Ruapekapeka Military Pā site. Notable highlights were the walk at dusk up Flagstaff Hill in Russell, and the sunset ferry ride home to Paihia.
One of our L3 History students, Maea Wikohika, shares her personal story of the trip:
“It was surreal for me to travel to the Bay of Islands as a part of a school group. Te Tai Tokerau is special to me, as my Mother’s whakapapa is from there. I have visited these places many times before, completely unaware of the history and significance it contains. Particularly visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. It came to my attention that while The Treaty of Waitangi is more acknowledged, well-known and taught about than previous generations, many opinions still circulate it, and some individuals are truly unaware of the significance Tī Tiriti ō Waitangi holds. Being surrounded by the breathtaking views of Flagstaff Hill in Russell, the quaint streets of Paihia, and the battle sites of the Northern Wars, it was a beneficial way to learn and absorb new information. It has reminded me that our history is embedded into every piece of architecture and landscape in this country, whether we know it or not.”
