Whina takes out House Lip Sync!

TGC —

Congratulations to Whina house who won the inaugural House Lip Sync competition.

The 2021 House Spirit events ended this term with the inaugural Lip Sync competition which saw the gals in green take out the win.

Their clever video mash-up was made up of hits from TV and Films 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air', 'Pitch Perfect', 'Beverley Hills Chihuahua', 'Hotel Transylvania', and 'Mamma Mia'.

Whina House Leaders Alysha Gill and Taylah Pratt have been proud advocates for the Arts throughout their time at Tauranga Girls' College and it seemed only fitting that their epic Lip Sync took out the win for our very first Lip Sync competition.

Judge and teacher in charge of House Spirit, Christina Cassells said:

On top of the many other changes to our kura’s House competition this year, 2021 saw the introduction of the new Inter-House Lip Sync, an event designed to bring an arts component into the House competition as well as providing our girls with another opportunity to dress up in their house colours and have a bit of fun.
With COVID alert levels continuing to impact gathering sizes, the decision was made to turn the House Lip Sync into a virtual competition. Each House was required to choreograph their lip sync, then film it to be shared with the rest of the school and watched in whānau time. Initially, the girls were a bit disappointed that they weren’t able to perform their lip syncs live, however the virtual aspect of the competition added another layer of creativity and all five Houses made the most of this by filming their lip syncs in a variety of interesting locations and editing their films for some added flare.
Although all five Houses were faced with a number of hurdles during the production of their lip syncs, every House managed to get over the line, producing five lip sync films that were all entertaining in their own unique way. Each one was a reflection of both the culture of the House and the hard work and time the girls put in which made selecting a winner really difficult. In the end, the Whina House Lip Sync came out on top, followed by Sheppard and Batten. Their well choreographed and edited lip sync was both funny and slick, including a number of costume and location changes and even a scene at the pool!
It’s safe to say that the first ever TGC House Lip Sync competition was a success and we look forward to seeing the event continue to grow and evolve in years to come.
