Principals Pānui

Principal —

Nau mai haere mai and welcome to our first newsletter/pānui for 2022

I trust that you all had some valued time out with friends and family over the school break and are ready to get back into school mode. We are excited to get underway!

A special welcome to new families/whānau to Tauranga Girls’ College. A school with its aspirations to be the ‘School of Choice’ for any student in the Bay. A school in which no matter the talent, ability and passions of any student, endeavors to uphold an environment that is caring, supportive and supports success for all. We can only achieve this with the support of TGC families and thank you for the support we have been afforded.

COVID-19 Update

I want to assure you that school is open for onsite learning. Students should not be at home unless directed by the MoH to do so or are simply unwell for another reason. Mask wearing, limiting gathering sizes, good hygiene practices and the like all support your young person to be at school and learning under the RED COVID framework.

Any positive cases associated with the school will result in the public health unit of the MoH getting in touch and our COVID-19 action plan will kick into place. All communications will be via email and or our FaceBook and Instagram page. The health and wellbeing of our staff and students is always paramount so you can be assured we will keep this at the forefront of our mahi.

If you test positive and have been asked to isolate by the MoH, please let us know by emailing or phoning our school. We can then support your young person's learning via the Google classroom. Please ensure they are familiar with the Google classroom and are remote learning ready at all times.

Thank you for your support of the mandate for mask wearing (unless you have an official exemption from a MoH approved site) and for supporting the vaccination plan as stated by the Government. All staff at TGC are vaccinated and are mandated to get their booster when eligible. Already we have seen that wearing a mask has been critical in reducing the spread of the virus when anyone has tested positive.

My Vaccine Pass

Many field trips, events and activities outside of the classroom at TGC require us to use specialist facilities that require all visitors to have a ‘my vaccine pass’. For that reason, it is helpful for us to know if your young person has one of these. Thank you to those who have uploaded this information onto the parent portal. Please do so if you have yet to do this. This information is stored safely by Mrs Deb Taylor (dtaylor@tgc.school.nz) and rather than each teacher asking each student, they can simply access Yes they are or No they do not have a my vaccine pass if required for their activity. Already the pass is required for café's, sporting venues, movies etc.

A mihi whakatau to welcome new colleagues and students

Last week we welcomed all new students, teachers and support staff to the school. Whilst a formal powhiri was not able to be had, we thank kaumatua Hori Ahomiro for his support on this day. Nau mai haere mai to TGC!

“Such a positive feel out there”

How exciting to feel that positive in the school as Year 9’s got underway with senior students in support last week. It's always a little nerve racking when you are new, but we deliberately have Yr 9’s in early and on a familiarization plan before inviting the remaining year levels.

A gift for everyone

All students will be gifted a new house badge this year. Inspired by the tukutuku panel poutama staircase pattern, the badge encapsulates the learning journey, the challenges and the quest for improvement as a wahine of TGC!

Pastoral Support

All students belong to a vertical whānau group, a house and have a House Dean and Deputy Principal to support them. Along with the Careers advisor, Guidance Staff, Learning Hub and the Director of International Students, our students are certainly well cared for. You can email staff directly if you have any questions or concerns. Email details can be found on our website.
