Attendance

TGC —

Why attendance matters

Being at school everyday matters. The more knowledge ākonga get at school, the more choices they will have when they leave.

There are four attendance categories:- which describes your young person

  • Regular attendance: students with over 90% attendance, missing fewer than five days of school in a standard ten-week term
  • Irregular absence: students with more than 80% and up to 90% attendance
  • Moderate absence: students with more than 70% and up to 80% attendance
  • Chronic absence: students with 70% attendance or less

If your young person cannot attend, please inform the school via email at absences@tgc.school.nz or phone (07 5788114). Regular attendance strengthens learning.

  • If absence is for a period longer than five days, there should be a medical certificate

  • If absence is due to overseas travel, it will be coded G, which will appear as unjustified. Please advise the school before being away.

  • Learners with more than five days of unexplained absence will be contacted by the school for an explanation or invited for a whānau meeting if attendance becomes a concern.

Also, for Health & Safety reasons, Year 9 & 10 students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during the day. There is a school canteen, or students should be encouraged to be prepared with refreshments for the day, whether purchased or made with ingredients from the home pantry.

If students need to leave school during the school day for an appointment or are unwell, they must be signed out through the school office.
