Tauranga Girls’ College Basketballers Reaching for the Stars

TGC - Sport —

Over the last few months, Tauranga Girls’ College Premier Basketball players have been busy reaching for the stars.

Following a steady rebuild over the last four years, Tauranga Girls’ College Basketball is building a strong programme and becoming an identity in the basketball sporting arena. After a successful 2022 campaign, results of back-to-back Tauranga City Basketball Secondary School Title Winners, BOP Secondary School title winners, and undefeated across all school exchanges, Tauranga Girls’ College finished the year placing third at New Zealand Secondary School Basketball Nationals in Palmerston North.

That result puts Tauranga Girls’ College firmly on the basketball radar.

2023 has started with a National Secondary School 3x3 Championship Title. With an excellent win against Westlake Girls’ High School in the final, the team was undefeated during the summer 3x3 series and the national tournament.

Our team's success has resulted in individual success, with players receiving national honours.

Pahlyss Hokianga, New Zealand U16 representative travelling to the FIBA Asia Qualifiers held in Jordan in the July school holidays. Congratulations on winning the Bronze Medal.

Maia Kahura, representing Aotearoa Maori U19, representative travelling to the NABI Nation Basketball tournament in Arizona, USA, in July.

Kiritiana Patea, trialist New Zealand U17 final team selection, will follow U17 Representative Nationals in July.

Anika Hyland, Honey Coney and Pahlyss Hokianga were selected for the Whai franchise to play the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa women’s semi-professional basketball league starting in July and televised on Sky Sport.

Players are also representative players with Tauranga City Basketball U17 and U19 grades, and eleven players representing TCBA in U15 and U13 rep teams. Not only do the students play basketball, but they also represent across netball and volleyball, coach Intermediate teams and officiate local leagues. Congratulations to the U17 placing fourth at Nationals (assistant coach James Patea) and our U15 (Head Coach Jeanna (Gee) Cooney, assistant coach Richie McClenaghan) taking home the Silver medal at Nationals!

Congratulations to our girls representing. We wish you the best of luck and enjoy the journey and comradery competing at the highest levels. We are proud of you.

As the second part of the season begins for Tauranga Girls’ College Basketball, we appreciate the support of our TIC Pam Jones, our whanau and coaches who give their time and energy to contribute to making the players better students, basketball players and great rangatahi.

Exciting times are ahead. Let’s go, TGC Basketball.
