Kell Crowther - Year 10 Art

What I wanted from this painting was a sense of freedom. I wanted to experiment with different mediums and see how they blended together. I wanted to create something I could be proud of. I’d like to think I achieved these things.

I used lots of layering in this painting to create a feeling of depth. I started with a layer of ink. Then I used a lot of tape, frisket and spray paint. The colours were just colours I liked. I wanted to avoid circles because I didn’t want it to feel soft - I was going for bold and striking. I wanted the owls to be a focus, but for the background to be a painting in its own right.

I chose to make the smaller owls pure white because they were meant to imitate silhouettes - giving more depth to the piece. The shading was originally unintentional, but I liked it so it stayed.

The quote is from the musical Wicked.

Some advice I would give to future artists is to embrace your mistakes. Literally. If something spills or doesn’t work the way you intended, keep it. Make it work. It can make your piece better in a completely unexpected way.
