One of the projects we had to work on for my Year 10 Art class was a whakataukī painting. We had to research a whakataukī and its meaning, then design a piece representing the whakataukī.
The techniques we used were layers. For example, my whakataukī was Titiro whakamuri kōkiri whakamua which means, Look back and reflect so you can move forward.
In my art piece, I had a long road as my first layer, then my main character that I drew was a girl looking back over her shoulder towards the road, and then trees as my border. This was meant to show the girl looking back at the road, reflecting on her past whilst walking in the other direction through the trees. Each layer was separated with small, thin pieces of wood, which gives a more 3D effect and shows the separation of each layer.
