Students Shine at Toi Wearable Art Competition
Earlier this term, students from Tauranga Girls’ College took to the stage to showcase their creativity in Toi, the national Wearable Art competition run by ShowQuest NZ.
The event was held at Baycourt Addison Theatre in Tauranga on Wednesday 4 June 2025.
Tauranga on Wednesday 4 June 2025.
Toi provided an exciting and authentic opportunity as part of our NCEA Product Design – Textiles and Fashion Design programmes at Levels 1, 2, and 3. Students applied design thinking and technical skills to bring imaginative wearable art pieces to life.
The competition gave students a meaningful purpose for their work, challenging them to meet a real design brief and present their finished creations in a professional performance setting. It also offered a valuable chance to test and refine their prototypes, problem-solve under pressure, and gain confidence through public presentation.
We had great success on the night, taking home one of only two prestigious "Star of the Night" awards.
Chloe Culpan (Year 11) was recognised for her stunning entry in the category entitled "The Magic Garden" and will now represent our region at the national finals in Wellington during Term 3. This event leads into WOW – The New Zealand World of WearableArt competition.
We also received two Creative Concept Awards on the night.
Amelia Grason (Year 13) was recognised for her piece Te Moana Tūhuratanga (Ocean Discovery) in the Stories from the South Pacific category.
Chloe Culpan earned her second accolade for her stunning Magic Garden creation in The Magic Garden category.
In addition, a special award for Outstanding Stage Presence was presented to Leo Matthee (Year 12) for her compelling entry titled Human Nature in the Open Section.
These achievements, along with the gorgeous outcomes created by all our students, were a true testament to their creativity, commitment, and the high standard of design thinking we foster at Tauranga Girls’ College. We are incredibly proud of all who participated.
