Junior Badminton

Sport —

On 24 and 25 November, TGC entered a Junior Badminton Team into the Northern Region Championships, held in Tauranga.

The team consisted of Prachi Patel, Jin Lee, Umaiza Hussein, Niranjana Vinod Nair and Harmony Hohepa. Game one was against John Paul College and although TGC won one of the doubles matches, John Paul were just too strong. Saint Cuthbert's, from Auckland, were game two. They were incredibly strong and capable Auckland representative players who eventually went on to win the tournament. Although it was a match that our girls found tough, they really enjoyed playing such a slick team and learnt a lot from it. The final game on day one was a convincing win against Otumoetai 2. Day two was crossovers and TGC were playing off for 5th-8th. Game one was against Edgecumbe who TGC beat 6-0. Prachi had a particularly close and exciting 3 set singles match winning set 2 and 3 21-19, 21-19. Game two, against Trident HS saw each school win one doubles match. Although Jin played a strong and powerful match to win her singles game, Trident dominated the remaining three singles games. The team finished in 6th place. Shahlia Hussein (Y13 TGC Badminton player) spent the two days with the team supporting and cheering, which the team really appreciated. It was also lovely to have the support of the TGC Badminton Captain, Preeti Singh on day two. The team played with pride, determination and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the entire tournament.
