Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua: ‘I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past’
Last week we went out with a bang celebrating 74 years of the current House system and welcoming the new TGC Houses for 2021.
A highlight of the celebration was welcoming alumni back to our kura as we celebrated the end of an era.
We were joined by 1958 Freyberg House Captain Marlene Ware (nee Jensen), Mansfield House Captain Valerie Cooney (nee Slow), Batten House Captain Julienne Taylor (nee Armit), and Rutherford Representative Heather Marks (nee Mannering) in our final celebrations together as a school.
Val proudly wore her yellow badge, still intact after 62 years, Julienne admitted Batten was not the sportiest of Houses but knew how to talk, Marlene was full of pride on the renaming of her House, and Heather left us with the whakatauki Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua: ‘I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past’
Our students were captivated by the stories of the "old girls". These were followed by a presentation of a current badge of their former Houses and a symbolic letting go of a bunch of coloured House balloons with the current captains.
