Bronze Medal Match For the TGC NZ Secondary Schools Squash Team 2022

TGC —

Our 2022 NZ secondary schools squash campaign began on Thursday 04 August with a drive to Auckland’s North Shore Squash Club, which became our home and playing venue for the next four days. 46 teams, from 38 different schools and over 270 competitors playing for the title of best NZ Secondary Schools Squash Team 2022.

Our campaign began strongly with a 5/0 win in the qualifying round against Sacred Heart Girls' New Plymouth. This allowed us to move into Pool A of the Championship. Next game, a must win match against Hamilton Girls' High who had beaten us in 2021 but this was not their year as TGC took the tie 3/2 in the final match. Which allowed us to move through to the 3rd round against Wairarapa Girls' High. Continued success against Wairarapa Girls' High with TGC winning the tie 4/1.

Our successes meant that we moved through to Round 4 unbeaten but were now matched up against last year's winners Otumoetai College. Otumoetai College broke our winning streak and we lost the tie 4 games to 1, placing us 2nd overall in Pool A and the opportunity to play off for 3rd or 4th against the second team in Pool B.

An exciting Bronze Medal match against Whangarei Girls. Our team played strongly but unfortunately we did not get the wins we would have liked. The only slightly more experienced Whangarei Girls’ saw TGC defeated 4 games too 1. So it was 4th place overall for 2022 but the closest Tauranga Girls’ College has been for medal contention in many years.

The team played well throughout the competition and their squash certainly improved the more they played. It was without a doubt a fantastic experience to be able to offer the team the opportunity to play in such a big tournament and they did themselves, their coaches and TGC proud, whilst having a lot of fun along the way.

The team captained by Salma Hassan were Ella Hill, Nuvraan Kaur, Brianna Lewitt, Izzy Brettkelly, Ella Vrieze.

Special mention should be made of Ella Hill who was one of five senior players selected to represent New Zealand in the NZ Secondary Schools Squash Trans-Tasman series. She was selected as the team's top player. The team travels to Brisbane next week to play against Australians top junior teams. Ten games in five days. We wish Ella luck and continued successes on her squash journey.
