Tauranga Girls’ College goes to the Bay of Plenty Debating Regionals

Miss Lambert & Whaea B —

Kura from across the Bay of Plenty came together to compete in the Bay of Plenty Regional Debating Tournament. 28 of our ākonga competed in this event. They presented convincing arguments for/against moots such as 'This house would ban TikTok' and 'This house would ban schools from expelling students'.

There were several successes on the day, with one team making it through to the semi-finals after winning their first three debates. This team comprised Gayathri Dinesh, Ansh Dhot, Layla Hoskin and Erina Islam.

Special mentions must go out to Kell Crowther for receiving a 'Highly Commended' award, Kiarni Sperling, who was selected for the BOP Development Squad and Gayathri Dinesh, who was chosen as a reserve for the BOP Regional team. The BOP Regional team will compete against other regions nationwide at Nationals later this year.

We thank all the students for their mahi and manaakitanga in arguing against some fierce competition.
