Level 2 Drama Production ‘Girls Like That’
Level 2 Drama students performed 'Girls Like That' directed by Kelly Vercoe on Tues & Wed, 27 & 28 August to a full house. The play was a viciously funny, flinty rendition of Evan Placey’s eye-opening and often uncomfortably honest play.
Named Best Play for Young Audiences at the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards 2015.
When a naked photograph of schoolgirl Scarlett goes viral, rumours spread across smartphones like wildfire and her reputation becomes toxic, threatening to shatter the fragile unity of the girls she has grown up with. But how long can Scarlett remain silent? And why isn't it the same for boys? The girls narrate the story from the present when they are teenagers, with flashbacks to earlier school days when they settled into the social pecking order.
Our drama students worked as two fantastic choruses’ of eight, to share the re-telling of that day and the events that surrounded it. ‘We are in History class when it comes… ‘. It is ‘A snapshot of girlhood in the age of social media’ with some big themes and questions, ‘She’s a prick tease cos she didn’t, and she’d be a slut if she did, so how does she get to the space in between?’ The play’s final lines presented by the purposefully cute-but-dorky girl-in-pigtails (and fantastic actress Yanni Corsame) also left us with an important challenge:We girls have to stick together, right?
The overall caliber of acting was extremely high but there were some stand-out performances among the monologues presented (as part of Scarlett’s family tree highlighting much of what our female ancestors have fought for). Eva Dawson’s monologue as ‘girl in flapper dress’ along with Elea’s Hargreaves ‘Girl with shoulder pads’ were on point! Level 2 students were also responsible for contributing to the technical requirements of the show and Jiyoung Kim and Hannah Park's dance choreography were another highlight of the night.
Huge shout out to Greta Fisher (Year 11) for her work on lighting. Special mention also goes to our new international student, Maxime Bottges for stepping up last minute to run sound AND projection when another student came down sick on Monday. And once again, a massive congratulations to the cast, crew & director on an exciting and challenging performance of ‘Girls Like That’!
Next up, come see the Year 13 Drama Production of ‘Jane Eyre’, 25 & 26 September at 7 pm in TGC Hall, gold coin donation. Get it, girls!
