Smokefree Rockquest 2023

Hawa Seki-Lema —

Tauranga Girls’ College was proud to be represented by two rock bands, The Latchkey Kids and Viceroy, at the Smoke-free Rock-quest competition. Rockquest is Aotearoa’s nationwide live original music youth event allowing young musicians to perform live in a professional setting.

The Tauranga Regionals were held at Otūmoetai College this year and featured youth bands from around the Bay of Plenty. Each group performed an original song in front of adjudicators and a live audience. Our two senior bands took the stage during the highly anticipated final session of the day.

During their performance, Viceroy delivered a delightful, high-impact song that left a lasting impression. The band showcased their talent with a fantastic guitar solo, complemented by solid beats and memorable melodies.

In The Latchkey Kids' performance, many were particularly captivated by Zoe’s impressive guitar solo, which added a dynamic element to their set. Additionally, Ashana, the vocalist, introduced a unique touch by incorporating the tambourine, adding an extra layer of depth and flair to their performance.

The captivating performance by The Latchkey Kids earned them a spot among the top fourteen bands in the region, securing their place in the upcoming Bay of Plenty regional finals. They will be showcasing their talent again on June 23 at Totara Street. Don’t miss out on a fantastic evening of fun performances as the top fourteen battle it out for a place in the National Finals.
