A SPECIAL REPORT: Mobile Phone Ban in Schools

TGC —

The New Zealand Government's implementation of a phone ban in schools has garnered significant support from many parents and educators, whilst also raising some concerns. Although smartphones are now a part of everyday life, they do pose particular challenges in education and the well-being of our young people.

This is also an opportunity to applaud the action of students to comply with the expectations of phones being away for the day. We also wish to thank you for your support in helping our young people to get it right and be responsible when using their phones.

This phone ban is designed to minimise distractions, improve focus, and foster a better learning environment for all. It aims to improve academic performance, increase attention spans, and reduce the risks of mental health issues.

Ensuring student compliance will be challenging. However, talking to your child about the benefits in an age-appropriate way will help them understand the broader context. Teaching young people responsible technology use and setting clear boundaries is essential.

The phone ban is a multifaceted issue that requires thoughtful consideration. The ultimate goal is to create a learning environment that supports holistic child development, balancing the benefits of technology with the importance of real-world connections and experiences. Promoting engagement, connection, and well-being will empower your child to make informed technology choices and develop essential life skills beyond the classroom.

This Special Report will help you support your child during this time of transition.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the well-being of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
