Athletics day 2021

Scout Atkins and Olivia Banfield —

Our girls had a great day in the sun enjoying Athletics Day 2021! On Thursday 18 February Tauranga Girls´ had our second whole school event with the newly introduced school houses! Due to being under level two covid restrictions we had to adapt and instead of having our activities at the domain as per usual, we held the event on our very own TGC field and had a blast!

It was such an amazing day seeing all of our new vertical whanau classes and new houses getting involved and supporting each other in the events. The encouragement and support from all our girls was so cool to see. House spirit across the school was really amplified this year, with whole classes unified in matching dress-ups, bold and bright banners being paraded around the field, and new house chants to ignite the enthusiasm and competitiveness in us all. There was certainly a great feeling of togetherness and sisterhood among everybody.

The social events such as the dunk bucket, Twister, sack races, hurdle relays and three legged races, got everyone involved and meant everyone, at all levels of athleticism, enjoyed the day, regardless of whether they were competitive or not. This was a lot of fun and looking around the smiles were great to see.

We were also very impressed watching competitors in the more competitive events. A big congratulations to our champions in these traditional events:

Batten house ended up taking away first place at the end of the day, and were crowned our 2021 Athletics champions! Batten house was then followed by Whina in 2nd place, Sheppard in 3rd, Te Auetu in 4th and Mansfield in 5th place. With the level of house spirit present on the day, the other houses sure will be giving Sheppard a ‘run for their money’ at all the fantastic spirit events to come throughout the year. We look forward to the rest of the year and can’t wait to see which house takes it out! Bring it on!
