HURUHURU SCULPTURE Clay and mixed media

These are our huruhuru sculptures that we crafted out of clay, paua shell, feather and twine.

We learned about the symbolism of the huruhuru in Māori culture. For example, the huia feather is a revered treasure for Māori and symbolises leadership and mana. The feathers from the tail of the huia were particularly prized and were worn in the hair or around the neck by both men and women.

We used clay tools to shape, cut, form, make marks, cut holes and then left this to dry naturally. We then attached the feathers and paua and bound with twine to suspend them. When they are hanging and spin around you can see the beautiful detail on both sides
