Numeracy and Literacy Assessments - NCEA Co-requisites 2025
In order for a learner to be awarded any level of NCEA, they must gain the 20 credit literacy and Numeracy co-requisite. The co-requisite is a one-off requirement.
These Literacy and Numeracy standards will help ensure learners have the baseline skills recognised nationally. Literacy and Numeracy standards are a co-requisite of the NCEA qualification Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. .
Yr 10 students will participate in the first assessment event on 27- 29 May. This means they will sit an assessment in Reading, Writing and Numeracy and can gain up to 20 NCEA credits. Students will prepare for these assessments during their English and Maths core learning time. They will also be strengthening their Numeracy and Literacy in other learning areas.
A selected group of year 11 yet to achieve the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Co-requisites will also be sitting these assessments 27 - 29 May.

For Yr10 & Y11 students - Assessment dates:
Literacy - Reading = Tuesday 27 May P3 & P4
Numeracy = Wednesday 28 May P3 & P4
Literacy - Writing = Thursday 29 May p3 & P4
What you need to know
There is no cost to whānau.
The assessments will be set by NZQA using the online platform. This is a digital assessment.
All NZQA rules and regulations apply to this assessment. There will be no derived grades offered for this assessment if students are unable to attend.
Students will need to create a learner login with the NZQA platform. They will be supported with this task at school.
The assessment credits will count towards NCEA results.

There will be a further assessment opportunity in Term 3 for students who are not successful in obtaining the standard in the first event.
What you can do to support your young person
Encourage reading and writing at home or in day-to-day activities.
Encourage numeracy at home by using measuring in recipes or talking about money.
Encourage students to ask for support when they need it.
