Sophie Denham - 10 SPRV
My name is Sophie, I’m a Year 10 student who takes Art as a subject.
In Art at the moment we are creating beautiful dioramas based on a whakatauāki (Maori proverb) that inspires us. I chose: Kaua e mate wheke mate ururoa - Don't die like an octopus, die like a hammerhead shark!! The meaning of this is to never give up, no matter what the struggle is. Octopuses are renowned for their lack of resistance when being captured, however a hammerhead shark will fight bitterly to the end. I chose this quote because I love the message of not giving up and persisting, and because I feel I have a strong connection with the ocean.
Our finished diorama will consist of three layers, with different mediums and techniques applied to each layer. Above is my detailed object (the octopus) which will be just one layer of my finished diorama. Throughout this process we are learning to use a wide range of materials and to apply awesome techniques (such as stencilling, transferring images with gel medium, working with modelling compound and shellac and also doing detailed tonal work), which we will use to create a really interesting piece of art.
I love taking Art as a subject at TGC and I can't wait to see what things we will get up to for the rest of the year.
