Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi - As an old net withers another is remade

Several students from TGC travelled to Tāneatua, Wednesday 17 March to take part in the Annual Leadership Summit at Te Kura Whare in Tuhoe whenua. Year 11-13 rangatahi from around the region joined together for a day of learning and wānanga. Teia Kahura, Hemorere Heke-Ririnui, Kennedy de Bono, Tuinga Weti, Jahnay LeLievre and myself, Layla Palmer, were our school representatives selected for the day.

There were about six guest speakers - Nikki Kennedy (business woman), Waimirirangi Ormsby (environmental protector), Te Kuri Dewes (journalist), Jack Tai Poa (social media personality) and others. They all talked about sustainability but in their own way about what sustainability means to them and what they do in their daily lives. We were then each put into groups with other people from different kura, and then into small groups from there and we each got one big question we had to answer. The kaimahi had given us methods and ways to answer the question and at the end of the day each group had presented their “pitch” to the group on how to solve the issue. Our question was “How might we work more collaboratively with the use of technology with the separation of different questions?” We presented it as a skit. Hemorere won a prize for her mahi in her roopu.

Overall it was an amazing experience and I highly recommend rangatahi attend again next year. Thank you to all the kaiako who organised this experience.
