Principal's Pānui

Principal —

As we come to the end of Term 2, I wish to thank all of our students for their leadership and for their service to our school. Not only did we celebrate a service day earlier in the term, but since then, groups of students have continued to help in the wider community by giving of their time and of their skill. Thank you to my colleagues also, who continue to give so much of their time in order for our learners to be better than before so that they can continue to make a positive difference where they stand.

Te Tauranga o Ngā Waka
The Regional Secondary Schools Kapa Haka championships take place this Friday and our roopu competes at 10:00am at QEII.  A gold coin donation gets you in the door. The combined TGC/TBC group have been practicing for a long time, and under the guidance of head tutor Matua Ed, are bound to do our two schools, their whānau and wider hapu and iwi proud. See you there!

Tauranga Peninsula Kāhui Ako (TPKA)
Kotahitanga Day. Last Friday, the TPKA had their first Teacher Only Day. The day was hosted at TIS and was a wonderful success. 750 colleagues gathered to engage in workshops and to listen to two inspiring guest speakers. Thank you to the Across School Teachers (ASTs) who did a lot of the behind the scenes work in preparation for this day including our very own Ms Caroline Gill. To be able to collaborate and interact with like minded professionals was fantastic and I am sure our students will benefit from our learnings.

School Spirit
We had a very successful school house spirit haka competition last week. The event was the most successful one yet and it was a real ‘feel good’ event that bought our entire school together. Thank you in particular to the House Prefects and teachers for their contribution to this special event. Mansfield House took out the competition followed ever so closely by Whina House. Tune into our FB page for some video footage of the event.

School Production
Congratulations to the TBC led school production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The talented staff and students of our two schools were truly on show for all to enjoy. Congratulations to the TGC crew and performers who also made our school proud.

The Big Sing head to Nationals
Congratulations to our Chorale who are now heading to Christchurch next month to compete in the National competition. Go TGC!

EPro8 team success
Congratulations to Mrs Jensen and the Year 10 team of Gayathri Dinesh, Erina Islam, Jin Lee and Shefaa Swailam who have been competing in a maths, engineering and science challenge called EPro8. This is the first time we have entered this competition and have now gone through to the grand final! The UoW Engineering staff are very keen on talking to our girls about future pathways in this area!

Enrolments 2022
A team of staff along with the Principal are out and about visiting our contributing schools soon and sharing information with potential new students. We are excited by the numbers of students that will be engaging with us. Please share our school's Open Evening with friends and family. Open Evening Thursday 5 August 5.30pm in our Sports Hall

Being Safe
A reminder to all of our students and families that during winter hours, it is even more important to ensure that students walk home in well lit areas, meet in safe locations if being picked up after hours and report any unsavoury behaviour to the Police by calling 105 or if urgent dialing 111.

Parents or visitors onsite
A reminder that if you need to speak to a student or staff member, you must do that via the front office. A time can then be provided for you during non teaching time. During school time, the priority is to ensure learning and teaching is at the forefront of what we do. For everyone's health and safety, please do the right thing and book in a time so that a respectful conversation can be had. Alternatively, email the staff member you want to see. Details are on our website.
