Renaming 'Mufti Day'

Communications Committee —

Within our community we've come to understand that certain terms can make others feel small and discriminated against. For example the terms 'gay' or specific racial slurs. Recently, a team of leaders have been looking into the term 'mufti' and whether it is deemed culturally appropriate.

Within the media there has been a lot of talk about the word 'mufti' and the origins of the word. Many kura across Aotearoa have already decided to move forwards and make a change to the name.

Here at Tauranga Girls' College we value the diversity and in moving forwards have addressed days in which we don't wear uniforms to school as 'Non-uniform day'.

A team will be looking at what we name these days in future...stay tuned!

In addition to the non-uniform day, there was also an optional march around the school at lunch time to show support for the LGBTG+ community.
