This is a diorama piece inspired by my whakataukī: Poipoia te kākano Kia puāwai - Nurture the seed, and it will blossom.
My diorama has four layers, each separated by straws, making it a three-dimensional shape. The first layer is a detailed drawing of hands symbolising new life. The second layer is a tree, which I used leaf stencils to make more interesting. For the third layer, I used a pressing technique with gel medium to create the green background, and my last layer is the sky, for which I used a sponge to give it depth.
The hands are holding a seedling while the tree is fully grown. I wanted to make the hands look like they were nurturing the young version of the tree, providing care and support. The grown tree is the positive outcome of this nurturing, relating to the whakataukī.
