Whakanuia to Te Tauranga o Ngā Waka

TGC —

3rd place overall at the Regional Mataatua Competition.

After a successful 10-week campaign of noho our Te Tauranga o Ngā Waka kapa haka roopu of 20 ākonga wāhine and 20 ākonga tāne from Tauranga Boys' College successfully came 3rd at the recent Mataatua Regional Kapa Haka Competition yesterday in Opōtiki. 

The roopu was led by Kavaana Thompson (Y12) as Kaitātaki wāhine and Kawana Heke-Philips (Y13) as Kaitātaki tāne and tutored by Te Matatini champions Matua Ed Te Moana, Rapaera Tawhai and Tamati Waaka. They took out several awards for their kaha (strength), māia (confidence) and manawanui on the atāmira (stage). Their achievements include:

  • 1st Whaikōrero
  • 1st Kākahu
  • 2nd Titonga hou
  • 3rd Waiata tira
  • 3rd-equal Kaitātaki Tāne

We are so proud of their mahi and to see the positive impact they have on the kura with their mahi walking our uara (values), leading in Te Ao Māori and leadership.
