TGC Basketball —

TGC Basketball like all school sports are thankful to have sports competitions underway in 2022.

 Although no 3x3 Nationals to start the 2022-year TGC Prem Squad and TGC Junior Squad attended the 3x3 Aimee Russell Waikato Tournament both teams placing third.

The annual pre-season tournament hosted by Rotorua Basketball is an opportunity for TGC teams to build combinations and experience. The tournament show cases the level of skill, fitness and game knowledge required to compete against the top schools in NZ, Junior A finished third in Junior Division One and Prems finished fourth in Elite Girls Grade.

Proud of our TGC Basketball debutees Ruby Jones, Grace Barrett, Livvy Perenara, Riley McClenaghan, Talia Rankin, Marika Ririnui, Harmony Hura-Yates.

Congratulations to TGC players selected for National, Franchise and regional representative teams we are immensely proud of your achievements.

Senior Premier season goals were to win Toi-Ohomai Secondary School League, achieved this beating Mount in the final to go back-to-back winners. Achieved goal two to qualify for nationals securing 4th place in Zone 2.

Nationals held in Palmerston North 03 -08 October. The top 24 teams in NZ compete for the national title. TGC ranked as an extreme outsider finished pool play 2nd. Prelim quarter final crossover against Mount Albert Grammar a tough game both teams leading at quarter intervals with TGC surging ahead in the final three minutes to win the game 76-69. TOP 8 secured we had achieved goal three. Quarter final versing a very quick and tenacious Hastings Girls High a win would mean semi-final. A dominate performance by TGC winning 97-69 demonstrated a real unity and confidence within our team.

History has been made by this team. The highest finish by TGC at BBNZ Nationals was 8th in 2011. Three players were in Year 9 (Maia, Cassie and Honey). TGC played St Andrews in the semi final losing by 12 points (84-72). Again, another hard-fought match, given another three minutes our team would have won. Final game verse Whangarei Girls 86-74 win to TGC. 3rd place at BBNZ Secondary School Nationals 2022 TGC is now on the radar of schools to watch in the future. Well done team, well done TGC community. Lots of thank you’s to all our whānau who came down to support, those at home sending messages and watching the live streams and TGC School Community for the messages. What a way to finish the season.

To our sole Year 13, Harmony Hura-Yates, we wish you every success for the future and thank you for being part of TGC Basketball. To Gee, James, Manuel, Di thank you for instilling a sense of whanaungatanga within our team, giving us the skills to fill our kete and shape us as strong wāhine. To Pam Jones, thank you the muscle behind the machine, to our whanau thank you for supporting and believing in us.
