House Haka Competition

House Spirit —

On a cold Thursday morning last week, Tauranga Girls’ College came together in the Sports Hall for the House Haka competition. It may have been freezing outside, but inside the heat was on - who would walk away with the win?

The morning began with the whole school singing Tauranga Moana, accompanied beautifully by Hemorere Heke-Ririnui, Shavawn Walker and a host of acoustic guitars. But that was just a warm up, next on the program was the main event... the Maunganui Haka. As current House Points leaders, it was Sheppard’s privilege to perform first. This house always works as a team, their colours were awesome and their haka was amazing. Mansfield was next up and blew the judges away with their passion and commitment, Whina followed pulling out all the stops then Te Auteu’s loud and proud performance was a real credit to them. Batten were lucky last and their rousing performance was a fitting end to an awesome show of school pride.

Ka pai, to all involved! A huge thank you to our guest judge Kiri-Lee Ririnui for her Kapa Haka expertise and touching final words.

The results?

🥇 First Place: Mansfield

🥈 Second place: Whina

🥉 Third equal: Batten, Te Auetu and Sheppard

House points aside, school spirit was definitely the winner on the day. Seeing students cheer in support of rival Houses and then watching our whole kura perform Maunganui together at the end of the competition, warmed all our hearts... even on the chilliest of July mornings!
