Road Safety Week

Hunter Ririnui —

Road Safety Week, ran from the 9th-15th of May, was a week to promote road safety awareness, and emphasise our responsibility to keep ourselves and others safe

Road safety does not just concern drivers, it’s the responsibility of everyone; pedestrians, passengers, cyclists and drivers - to ensure we are exerting safe behaviour on the road.

At TGC, our Students Against Dangerous Driving Committee (SADD) is dedicated to promoting road safety awareness within our kura. Their key principles are: sober drivers, safe speeds, no distractions, avoid risks, drive to the conditions and build experience. With these principles in mind, the SADD Committee celebrated Road Safety week through various activities, including a quiz, lunchtime games and even a photo booth!

The aim of games such as the memory game was to expose students to many risks present on the road in a short period of time - then have them remember as many of these as possible. By doing this, students become aware of what they need to look out for when on or around the road, in order to avoid the risk of being caught in a dangerous situation.

There was also an obstacle course that was to be completed blindfolded with the guidance of a friend. Students having their vision limited simulated the feeling of driving while under the influence, when senses and reaction time are hampered.

SADD Committee member Nancy Yang says the committee’s work is “relevant to our students since the majority of them are learning to drive and getting their licence.”

Overall, the week was a great success, with many students learning about new ways to keep themselves and others safe on and around the road. A huge thank you to the TGC SADD Committee who continue to do a fantastic job educating our students on what it means to be a responsible road user.
