Careers and Pathways
Careers in Sport and Infrastructure
Over the last two weeks, we have taken a group of Year 11 rangitahi out to look at pathways within the Sports and Infrastructure industries.
We joined Tauranga Boys’ and Aquinas Colleges to visit the Adams High-Performance Centre at Mount Maunganui, where we heard from various people involved with the Steamers what their roles are and what career paths they have taken to get there.
The students were then given the opportunity to do a training skills session with the Steamer’s coach and a couple of players.
Feedback from the students was highly positive, “I learnt about the importance of surrounding yourself with good people, being involved and taking up the opportunities that are offered to you.”
We took the group to our ‘Careers in Infrastructure’ day out. We again joined other colleges and had a personalised tour of Toi Ohomai, looking specifically at the Electrical, Automotive and Construction training opportunities.
We then went to Tauranga Boys’ College, where we had presentations from Fulton Hogan, Brian Perry Civil and Connexis outlining the extensive opportunities for students within the infrastructure industry and had an on-site tour of the Cameron Road development.
“Respect, Effort, Attitude, Leadership. Are all really helpful in the workplace.”

Futures Academy and Gateway pathways
Applications are now open for the Bay of Plenty Futures Academy. This partnership between secondary and tertiary providers offers students the experience of hands-on, work-relevant learning that provides a strengthened pathway to apprenticeships, employment or further tertiary study. Rangitahi can earn significant credits towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and count towards tertiary credits, certificates and qualifications.
Students enrolled in the Futures Academy gain more than credits towards their NCEA. Future Academy students can also:
Gain confidence, skills and experience that employers value
Participate in industry visits and field trips
Try tertiary education for free while still in college
Gain stronger partnerships into apprenticeships
Gain stronger pathways into employment
Secure a strong pathway into further trades training, study and qualifications.
Look at their website, Futures Academy, to see what courses are available and see us in the careers office for an enrolment pack.
