On Tuesday, 15 August 2023, Tauranga Girls’ College competed against students from Tauranga Boys’ College in the inaugural debate hosted by the Lions Club. The students representing Tauranga Girls’ College were Gayathri Dinesh (Y12), Layla Hoskin (Y12) and Bree McTavish-Hurawai (Y13).

The event was put on at the Cinema in the Historic Village and attracted a crowd of Lions’ members, friends and whanau of the speakers.

The students debated the moot that “This house would introduce a maximum wage”, with Tauranga Girls’ College affirming and Tauranga Boys’ College negating. It was a challenging topic, but both sides presented convincing arguments with the help of supporting props. Although Tauranga Boys’ College walked away with a win, it was an enjoyable evening for all.
