Phone free kura

TGCFebruary 19, 2025

We are a phone-free kura which means cell phones are to be placed in students' bags and turned off from the time of the first school bell to the end of the school day at 3.15 pm. This aligns with the Ministry of Education directives ‘Phones away for the day’ (2024).

If a student is non-compliant and a phone is visible in class it is to be surrendered to the teacher. It will not be available until the end of the day.  The phone will be given to the office for safekeeping. A text will be sent to the whānau. The student is to collect from student reception at the end of the day from a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

If there is a second incident the phone will be confiscated and a text will be sent warning that a further confiscation will require the phone to be collected from the office by a caregiver or parent. The student is to collect from student reception at the end of the day from a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

If there is a third incident, the phone will be confiscated. A text and phone call will be made to whānau to let them know that the phone needs to be collected. It will NOT be returned to the student. The Deputy Principal or Dean will discuss with whānau and advise that the student MUST hand their phone to the Office each morning for an agreed period of time.
