Navy Officers Visit Tauranga Girls' College

TGC - CareersFebruary 29, 2024

Last week, a team of young Navy Officers visited us in the new Pathways space.

They had informal chats with students regarding the Navy, engineering roles, scholarships and Navy life. They were from various specialist fields, with some also completing University Studies funded by the Defence Force.

Interesting fact -wāhine are currently Commanding Officers on more than 60 per cent of NZ Navy ships. You can read more here:

Shane Gillam is the Recruiter for our area. He will visit the kura later in Term 1 or early Term 2. Watch the Career Central notices for information.

Other opportunities

Senu Guruge, in Year 12, took the opportunity last year to visit HMNZS MANAWANUI at the Mount Wharf. Her biggest takeaway from the visit was that a navy ship looked nothing like what she had pictured in her head. It had a gym, a nice dining area, a lounge,’ everything was quite mechanical looking, of course, but these homely elements weren’t what she expected to see on a ship like this. She also learned a lot about different roles available in the Navy, such as diving, the opportunity to climb up the ranks, and how every ship had medical staff aboard.

Look out for similar opportunities this year. They are often last minute, so rangatahi will need to read the Career Central notices and emails and respond quickly.
