On Tuesday, February 20, Tauranga Girls’ College hosted their annual Competitive Athletics Day at the Tauranga Domain.

House spirit was in the air as students and teachers donned bright costumes and accessories. The day allowed students to spend time with friends, gain house points, and try different events to see what fit best for them.

There were many track and field events for students to choose from, from Long Jump to Javelin and various sprints. The Tauranga Girls’ College athletes came to impress with some astonishing results. Ruby Jones broke the school record for Shot Put and Discus, and Saskia Rhind broke the school record for high jump! The overall champions were:

Junior Girls - Siobhan Cameron,

Intermediate Girls - Ella Robinson,

Senior Girls - Saskia Rhind.

The Athletics team hosted a fundraiser selling Juicies and drinks to help cool down students on such a beautiful summer’s day, helping to raise money for their upcoming trips. Food vendors also helped keep students fed and ready to do their best.

The day finished with the house shuttle and ultimate relays, with Sheppard House coming out as the overall winner. Each house also participated in a cheer-off, adding to the positive atmosphere. Overall, the day was a great success, and we look forward to the Festival of Athletics in Term Four.
