FEATURED ARTISTS: Year 10 Whanaungatanga Environmental Sculptures.

TGC - ArtFebruary 27, 2024

The Year 10 Ngā toi and Art students got to know each other a little bit better at the start of the year by creating environmental sculptures in groups.

They first studied the work of Andy Goldsworthy, a British land artist and environmental sculptor. Students then created their environmental sculptures using natural 'found objects' from our school environment. Two of the groups' works are featured here:

Zara Tamatea, Kayla Benson and Eve Hirini created 'Pathway of Fire':

Our artwork was located at the gully's entrance on top of a green shrub. The materials used were prickly leaves in different colours to contrast against the green shrub and brown dirt floor and blend with the different colours. Andy Goldsworthy inspired us because of the leaf pathway he made in the forest as one of his environmental sculptures. Our artwork also reminded us of fire. As a team, we collected different coloured leaves and made this pathway by blending the colours depending on their stage (their colour).

Valencia Nguyen-Morrison and Kaea Price created 'Unity':

We planned our project on paper, then alternated between constantly collecting materials to use and creating our vision. Goldsworthy's work inspired them to use bark, leaves, branches and flowers.

Photographs were taken to give the artwork permanence, as once the wind picked up, these would start to blow away.
