Riding the Waves of Learning: Level 3 Outdoor Education Surfing Experience

TGCMarch 19, 2025

This term, our Level 3 Outdoor Education students have been exploring AS 91504 – Analyse issues in safety management for an outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies through the exciting and ever-changing environment of surfing.

With the ocean as both their playground and classroom, students have been critically analyzing the risks and challenges associated with surfing, from rip currents and changing weather conditions to surf etiquette and injury prevention. By applying theoretical safety frameworks to real-life scenarios, they have developed informed strategies to manage risks effectively.

Through hands-on experience, students have identified key hazards, assessed environmental and human factors, and devised practical safety management plans. Discussions on emergency response, risk mitigation, and personal responsibility have empowered them to make safer decisions in the surf and beyond.

Beyond the physical aspect, this experience has encouraged students to embrace resilience, problem-solving, and personal growth—key components of outdoor education. Whether it’s conquering a challenging break or refining their pop-up technique, each student has had the opportunity to apply theoretical learning in a real-world setting.

This immersive approach has not only enhanced their understanding of outdoor safety but has also reinforced essential leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. We are proud of their commitment to making outdoor adventures safer for themselves and others.

We’re incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing their continued progress in the surf and beyond!
