On Monday 10 March, ākonga in Level 1-3 Drama and our new ‘Behind the Scenes’ course went to Baycourt Theatre to see the live theatre show ‘Prima Facie’.
Prima Facie is a dramatic one-woman play written by Australian playwright Suzie Miller. It premiered in 2019, in Australia, where it picked up major awards from the Australian Writers' Guild. The 2022 London production of the show was nominated for five Laurence Olivier Awards, with wins for Best New Play and Best Actress.
"If you've ever doubted that theatre still has the power to change the world,
I hereby admit into evidence Prima Facie..." - NZ Herald.
Prima Facie ignites dialogue and challenges perspectives. That's why Tauranga's Tautoko Mai Sexual Harm Support partnered with NZ Theatre Company to make this powerful play accessible to as many young people across Aotearoa – for free. A huge thank-you from us! Our students also had access to a post-show Q&A with actress Cassandra Woodhouse and local support services, which was just as powerful.
Here’s what our students had to say:
“I thought the play was an extremely moving piece that made you realise the struggles many women face. It was an honour to watch as it empowered myself and the audience.” Alice Miller, Year 11
‘I thought the show was an amazing piece that made me realise what many women have to go through, I loved this piece.’ Shanique Olivier, Year 11
‘Despite being a one-woman show, all the characters were very well-defined and kept the audience captivated the entire time.’ Eilidh Duncan, Year 11
“I thought this was an inspiring piece that shows how you can make a change - one small step at a time. The playwright also said that she made more change in writing this play than all her years as a lawyer and I found that inspiring.’ Alica van Pareen, Year 11

‘This show was so incredible and even though it was very confronting, it was still very captivating and Cassandra filled the stage incredibly well! So glad we got the opportunity to see this show.’ Mackenzie Parkes, Year 11
