Empowering Future Tradeswomen: Wahine in Trades Event
On Thursday 13 March a group of senior students had the exciting opportunity to attend the Wahine in Trades event at Vertical Horizonz. This inspiring day aimed to encourage young women to explore careers in the trades industry and break down traditional gender barriers.
The event featured hands-on experiences, allowing students to interact with various stations that showcased the skills and tools used in different trades. They had the chance to try their hand at crane operation, experience scaffolding firsthand and understand the mental skills required to excel in the trades sector.
Companies like Fulton Hogan, LT McGuinness and Priority One were on-site, offering valuable insights and support to the next generation of tradeswomen. It was a day filled with fun, learning and empowerment, helping to pave the way for more women to enter this dynamic and rewarding industry.
Supporting Future Health Professionals: Hui ā Kura for Years 12-13
Recently, a small group of Year 12 and 13 students participated in our Hui ā Kura sessions, designed to inspire and guide rangatahi towards careers in health. For Year 12 students taking at least two pure science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), these sessions provide an introduction to the vast opportunities within the health sector, helping them consider pathways they may not have previously explored.
For those already set on a career in health, we provide tailored guidance through the Whakapiki Ake Health Workforce pipeline, offering the information and support needed to help them achieve their goals. Year 13 students are supported with tools and knowledge to smoothly transition into tertiary programs within the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, at Waipapa Taumata Rau/University of Auckland, in Auckland.
Through meaningful connections with role models who are on a similar journey, the students are exposed to a wide range of health career options, and empowered to pursue their dreams. This initiative is an exciting step in helping our rangatahi realise their aspirations in the health field.
Wrapping Up University Visits at kura
As we near the end of our first round of university visits, we’ve seen a great turnout from our senior students, eager to learn more about the opportunities each university offers. It's been a fantastic chance for them to explore different pathways and gather valuable information to help shape their future.
The final session will be held with Amadeo from AUT, who will be visiting kura on Wednesday 26 March, at 1.30pm during lunchtime. This session will take place in the Pathways department (P102) in our new Puwhenua building. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to get a closer look at what AUT has to offer as they make their decisions about their next steps.
