Mai i te Tumuaki | From the Chair

Stepping into the role of Chair for Te Kaunihera Rata o Aotearoa | The Medical Council (Council) has been straightforward from a functional point of view.

E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā karangatanga maha, ngā mihi maioha ki a koutou - warmest greetings to you all.

The Council is a well-oiled machine, adept at dealing with business as usual and also responding to curveballs. Kōrero around the table is robust, disagreement is common and welcomed, and diversity of opinion on any topic is valued.

A potential risk for the Council, as it adheres to its purpose of protecting the public, is disenfranchising the medical profession. The workforce is striving to meet evolving expectations, such as cultural competency and safety and intern supervision. It's clear from frontline experiences that the desire to do our very best for our patients may be at odds with our current ability to do so.

Solutions to this need to be system-wide, flexible, and adaptable. Standards for our profession cannot be compromised, but nor should medical professionals serve as the only solution to systemic challenges.

Council recognises its role in educating, regulating, and supporting doctors as we adapt to the rapidly evolving health system and needs of our community. We are acutely aware it has a fine balancing act to perform. Balancing these responsibilities is not easy, and we are committed to this difficult mahi, striving to find the best path forward that will ensure public safety by providing standards and guidance that support the highest standard of medical practice.

Nō reira, kia haere haumaru tonu koutou i ō koutou mahi, i ō koutou kāinga. Kia manawanui.
