Council's participation in the global dialogue on medical regulation

As part of our commitment to protecting the public, we continue to collaborate with our international regulatory colleagues. This supports us to continue to anticipate and respond to emerging issues and challenging environments. We recently participated in the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA )conference, a significant meeting exploring the theme ’Regulation in a Disrupted World: Challenges and Opportunities.’

We were pleased to have the appointmentation of Joan Simeon, Council's CEO, confirmed as the Chair of the Board of Directors of IAMRA during the IAMRA Member’s General Assembly (MGA). The New Zealand contingent, alongside representatives from diverse regulatory authorities, honoured her with a karanga and waiata, creating a poignant memory in the MGA.
Council takes immense pride in Joan stepping into this new role demonstrating confidence in her ability to navigate the challenges and opportunities in the ever-evolving landscape of medical regulation.

IAMRA BALI 2023 served as a dynamic platform for us to actively contribute to global conversations and spotlight valuable perspectives on international medical regulation in topics including the medical regulator’s role in current and emerging issues including:

  • when doctors use artificial intelligence
  • the medical workforce
  • safety and anti-racism
  • embedding consumer and public input into all we do
  • kindness in regulation (Being a kind but tough regulator)
  • planetary health.

Overall, the Council's active engagement at IAMRA 2023 was a significant contribution to a global dialogue, reflecting our commitment to advancing best practice in medical regulation.
