From the CEO | Council update - Sexual Boundary Notifications process review

Tēnā koutou, e ngā rau rangatira mā

The Medical Council receives notifications about the practice, conduct, and competence of doctors, which are assessed against our standards for the profession. In its commitment to upholding high standards of medical care and ethical conduct, Council is acutely aware of its role in protecting the public when it comes to sexual boundary notifications about doctors.

Council is currently liaising with international colleagues to inform a review its own processes.

This review will focus on meeting public expectations and ensuring our processes are fit for purpose and properly protect the public. The review will look at internal processes for notification triage and management, how disciplinary proceedings are handled, and possible changes to our legislation that could align how disciplinary tribunal processes with the New Zealand criminal courts’ approach to sexual violence cases.

As we move forward, our goal is to strengthen public safety and ensure high professional standards of the medical profession.
